I'm in SCOTLAND!

Image result for scottish flagSome kids go in holiday with their family to somewhere still in there country. Some people go overseas witht their family. Some just stay at and home.
And some kids fly on a plane by themselves with no one to help you but the airport staff.
And by some kids I mean ME!
OH YEAH! I went on a plane by myself to scotland. I Went on the Emirates flight. I landed in Dubai from Auckland and then boarded another plane to get to glasgow and scotland.
When I arrived a lady took me to get my luggage and sort everything out. Then I saw my Gran and Granpa in the pick up area. It's quite chilly here I think it's around nine degrees. Which is pretty cold. It hasn't snowed yet but i'm wishing for a white christmas. Fingers crossed!
I'm going to meet my Baby Cousin and all of my extended scottish family for christmas. It's going to be awesome.
Okay. Because of the flight l'm a bit Jetlagged so i'm going to sleep now.
Happy Holidays!

Extension Reflection

This year extension was really fun.
The first term Was about the treaty of waitangi and game design. We had to come up with a game to explain the treaty of waitangi.
The second term was all about Technology, navigation, coding and game making, and finding a solution to world problems. We had to try and design something that could make recycling easier.
For term 3 we focused on science and the living world. Sustainability for our Lakes and Oceans. We also had to create our Film festival movie.
Term 4 was all about UV light. We had to learn about how the light works and what energy it gives off as well as create a UV sensor that tells us the levels of UV light.

Hypothesizing with onion cells.

Group: Hinerangi, Jahzara, and I

Aim: see onion cells on a microscope

Hypothesis: I reckon at 100X magnification we’ll be able to see the onion cells.

Equipment:

Microscope
onion
slide
cover slip
Tweezers
Blue dye

Method: We started with the slide. Then we pulled a thin layer of skin off of an onion with tweezers. We placed the onion skin onto the slide then put some saline onto it so that the blue stain would spread easily. Then we gently placed the cover slip onto the onion skin.

Observation: On the 10x microscope we saw the cells and they looked something like this.
On the 40x magnification we saw it a bit more zoomed in but there wasnt that much difference.

Then on the 100x magnification we could only see purple from the stain.

Conclusion: My hypothesis was wrong and we saw the onion cell in 10x magnification, then we saw it in 40x but we didn’t see it on 100x magnification.

Planting a tree!

Today Mum, Kauri, Toran, Whakairo, and I planted a tree. Specifically a griselinia tree. I put it in the ground while mum digged the whole in the earth. The boys watched. The reason we went and planted a tree is because we want to save the world one tree at a time.
Hookey helped to of course!
You no doubt have heard of the Amazon rain forest and my mum was very passionate about it. So she bought a tree sapling at the warehouse. We planted it in mums paddock and we cant wait to see it grow into a beautiful tree.

The Tree of Life

This is the tree of life. In 1835 Charles Darwin figured this out by looking at different animals that look similar by seeing this he realised that everything is connected somehow. Animals change over millions of years and their changes help them survive in their environment. This definitely opened my eyes to the idea of everything being related. It's a very interesting concept and I must applaud it.

What do I know about Scientists?

Image result for neil degrasse tysonScientists probably have the most stereotypical expectations in our modern day society. But they aren't actually what they seem. I mean look at Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you look at him and don't know who he is. He looks like a normal person.

Scientists study the things around us and how they work. They don't Mix potions together and then test them on themselves. They test chemical reactions and look in microscopes to see the smallest things in the world. They don't Harness the suns power to make an ultimate death ray.

Scientists work to find understanding of the world around us and the things inside us. They are not makers of destruction. They are finders of Solutions.

Rainbow Swirl Cake

Walt: Reflect upon my actions and see what I should have done to make the situation better.

Today I made Rainbow swirl cake and it was very Tasty. I used this recipe and it was a pretty simple and easy to follow recipe. I only used one 23 centimetre cake tin so it didn't bake right the first time. The second time around I used a 20 centimetre cake tin twice to make 2 layers so the second attempt will be much better. I haven't iced the second attempt yet so I have only had the first attempt and it was very tasty. I am hoping that the next attempt will be delicious. I'm sure that it will be great!

The rainbow swirl cake was real change from my usual baking which is normally just vanilla cupcakes. I really enjoyed this cake. It made me feel like I was a kid and I love rainbows. So this was a fun cake to make. I reckon I've learnt that we have to follow the recipe precisely and get the right amount of time and quantity....... Isn't that a fun word, Quantity.

Anyway hope you enjoy and try out the baking recipe!

Cornwall park Souvenir mission.

Today we went to Cornwall park. We were given a challenge. Find a Souvenir and make up a story to go with it so here are my souvenirs and their stories.
Souvenir number one was a leaf. The story to go with it was that it's a leaf from and ancient tree plant originally from Japan. A sapling was brought over to Cornwall park and the tree has been growing for over a hundred years. That leaf comes from the sapling.
Souvenir number two was a flower. The story to go with that souvenir was that it was a flower from a tree that was first panted in the oxford garden in England. But when a disease that took over all of Europe hit the country so they had to take the flower tree away and plant it in cornwall park of New Zealand.

DLO Link

Click this link to view my DLO (Digital Learning Object).

The topic for this term was really interesting. I liked learning about other countries, and I learned some interesting facts. Learning about the countries helped open my eyes about the world around me. It was really fun.

Using the scratch was nothing new to me really. I used broadcast and it was a pain. I'm gonna have one giant block of code and no broadcast.  I will no longer be using broadcast.

Europe and North America's Connections.

Europe and North america have lots of similarities. It would make sense since in the past Europeans were the people who colonised america.
When the European Colonists came to america they brought a lot of things with them. Things like Culture, Religion, Clothes, Food Recipes, and many other things. They stayed in america and ended up creating a vast civilisation. Nowadays there are many similarities between Europe and North america. Some are Easy to see like Languages. Whereas some have been modified like Food.
In this Venn diagram you can see all the similarities and differences we could think of. I hope you enjoy.

40 hour famine

On Friday the seventh and Saturday the eighth of June I participated with a group of students in the 40 hour famine. We went over to school and had a blast we played games in the hall. We then practised our Items. I did my Item with Marika, and Jahzara. We decided to do a live singing performance of Taron Egertons cover of I'm still standing, (Spoilers, we won) and it was very fun. We then had a bit of a dance party before working on our recounts of the day. We finished that we watched a movie and then went to bed. Once we woke up we got ready to leave in the morning. The 40 hour famine was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it.

Tasting Food

Image result for pan au chocolatImage result for OlivesOn Tuesday the eleventh of June, we all had some food to eat. Bruschetta with olive oil sprinkled on top, two black olives, a piece of feta cheese and Pan au Chocolat. The Bruschetta tasted like slightly sweeter bread than usual and the olive oil is a nice dressing. The olives would have been better but they had been on the plate for a while and they we're a bit dry but still a nice refreshment. The Feta cheese was very rich and I loved that, nice and strong. The Pan au chocolat was delicious nice sweet bread and light chocolate. A tingle on the taste buds!
