Digital Nations 2030
On Monday the 19th of February, the year 7&8 extension group went to Cordis hotel in the big city.
We went there to experience an event called, digital nations 2030. We went into the crystal room (it
wasn’t actually made out of crystals) and got introduced to a whole bunch of people from omg tech and code
avengers they had a little talk with us and then sent us off.

The first thing I did was makey makey with food. There was peaches a banana and chocolates. I have to
admit I ate one or two of the chocolates but nothing else. I then moved on to robots which was really
easy because i’d done it before. Then I moved onto the code avengers puzzle quiz thingy. I spun the
wheel and then got a chocolate.

Overall I learnt that robots are really annoying and have to have everything perfect. I learnt that you can

Immersion Assembly
“Line Up!” Shouted Mr Goodwin “Everybody Line Up for immersion assembly!” we lined up for immersion assembly and then we went to the hall. The hall was Playing a song called Bright Idea by Vitamin D it matched the theme called Now That's Thinking It was all about Technology. Before the teams did their items Mr Burt told us a story of Manaiakalani.


I hope that we get to learn about how the Maori People hunted their food and built their homes and Marae. I also want to learn about how the Maori moved their supplies and things like that. I hope that we can make our own mini waka too. I think that we are going to learn about how the Maori moved around, cured colds and hunted their food.
I am excited for this term because it is based on technology and history and they are 2 of my favourite things. I think we are going to find out a lot about the Maori. I am super excited about Term 2. I can’t wait to start researching.

Estuary
Walt: Synthesise information from across multiple texts.
We have been trying to understand that plants play a big part in the ecosystem of an estuary. The plants eat the sunlight and then the mud snails, marine worms and crabs eat the plants. The shellfish and young fish eat the mud snails, crabs, and the marine worms. The older fish and the birds eat the smaller predators. Then the humans eat the older fish. Plants play an important role in an ecosystem so let’s keep them safe.

Corkious vs Demon Hunter spider

Walt: write narrative using descriptive language.
The first insect to make a move is the Corkious the armoured beetle gives the spider a swing with the cork on his back the spider takes really hard damage. The spider shoots it's web at the cork on the Corkious' back. The spider rips it off. The Corkious does not care he grows it back. The Corkious strikes many blows on the spider again and again the spider takes very heavy damage.
The spider has taken lots of damage now some of it's guts are spilling. If the demon hunter spider takes another hit from the Corkious and then it will be done. Unfortunately the Corkious is using the spiders distraction as a weapon and strikes him. The spider has been defeated and the Corkious feasts.

Ladybird Paragraph.
Walt: we are learning to use interesting vocab in our writing.
The Ladybird Is a very pretty Beetle with 7 spots with a red background they have 3 spots on each wing and 1 in the middle. Farmers like Ladybirds because they eat pests like aphids that eat plants. They have the pattern - that humans think are cute - to scare away predators. They also play dead. Female Ladybirds lay 1,000 Eggs throughout their lifetime.

Camp 2017
Walt: write about our experiences on camp
Have you ever been on a year 5 and 6 camp before? Well I have our camp we had this year the year five and six camp, if you want to know about it I will tell you. Read on to find out.
Year five and six camp is a camp at point England school that has been going on for 27 years, and guess who started it Mr Burt and he wasn’t even the principal then. We had the camp in 2017 week six from the 8th of march to the 10th. You may think that we slept at a campsite but we really slept at school on the field in tents. We do this activity called Killer Zone but we don't actually kill we have to do this sort of obstacle course when we throw balloons and catapult tennis balls to these camouflaged mats. We also do kayaking on the Point England beach. We do a whole bunch of other things too that I cannot tell you because there is no time.

My favourite parts were sleeping and bombing in the bombing pool. I liked sleeping because I was having the best sleep I had in ages. I liked the bombing because I love jumping and
swimming so that was really cool. In the bombing pool i also got to hold Miss Scanlan's Go Pro. the go pro did not have one of those handle stick things but that was okay.
I would like to say thank you to Mr Burt who made this camp and the leaders who helped us work together. I would also like to say thank you to the helpers who made us do all these amazing things at our awesome camp. I would like to thank Miss Haare who entertained us while we were waiting for food. I would like to thank Miss Takerei who made the food as well.
I learnt at camp that I can be a responsible and that I can show leadership. I recommend that every student does this in the future because it is a good way to build trust and work together as a team. It is also a great opportunity to help you make friends. The best part is if you are a bit protected by your parents they can come too.

Camp
Walt: tell your audience what you are looking forward to what are you hoping for and what you are nervous for Camp

Have you been on year five and six camp? I have, and it is really fun. If you go to point England school you get to go on year five and six camp.
For camp I am looking forward to the pools because I want to go in the Jacuzzi because I love being warm and if it rains it will be the best. I do not really know what I will want to do, but I do like swimming. I am also looking forward to baking because I love to bake.
I am hoping that we do not evacuate because on the day we evacuated I did not get much sleep and I felt like sleeping that day. I felt like just turning into Godzilla and I do not like to turn into Godzilla. I am also hoping we will win instead of lose with the points in the Generals.
I am nervous about the concert because we have a weird dance because it is computer generated on dance central 3. I wonder if we'll actually memorise the dance. I am also nervous about the weather because the weather forecast says it will be stink.

Native Birds in Tamaki
Walt: write persuasively.
Do you like Native birds in your backyard? Well I love native birds in mine, we need more in our area. Why? Read on to find out
Tui are important we need them in Tamaki. Tuis are one of the most beautiful birds of New Zealand and we need more. They are part of the Honey eaters in New Zealand, they are one of the very few birds that pollinate the plants in New Zealand. They can help our area in Tamaki to have more plants as well they will eat the Harakeke seeds and they will fertilise and plant them as well. Maybe that is a way you could get them to come.
The Kakapo is one of the most critically endangered birds in the world. It is the heaviest Parrot in the planet and it is a Nocturnal bird and we have lots of nocturnal birds in New Zealand. It has a beautiful colour. It is one of the most unique parrots in the world and wouldn't that make you proud.e more of them We need to have more of them.
We need to have the magpie decreased because they’re horrible. The magpie are pretty but once you get close to it it will hurt you. It has a sharp beak and it can stab you. I have seen images and even with the naked eye Magpies eating chicks. So we should get rid of the Magpies to keep native birds living.
I think having more of these two native birds will make everyone proud and happy . I think that if we have the Magpie eradicated then we could have even more of those two native birds, and their chicks won’t be eaten as much. That way more people will look at Tamaki as the Native community.

The Run
Walt: Write a recount about your experience.

I was surprised when Mr Goodwin told us we had to line up. Everyone was lined up except for me and then Mr Goodwin told me to hurry up I was a bit embarrassed. I had to hurry up and then Terry came out of the corner. I thought “Thank God I thought I was the only one.”
When we walked to the field I was wondering “why are we at the field.” Then When we were lining up I thought “Oh No it's a Run.” I just wanted to do some free writing that was all I wanted to do. Mr Goodwin told us the instructions and then we got ready to run.
Mr Goodwin surprised me by saying “Go” and not doing a countdown. I was doing Ok and then I started laughing I was actually having a good time that was just really weird for me. I looked around and everyone was laughing I was like what is going on I felt very odd.When we got to the finish I sat on my buns and then I fell onto my back I didn’t care if I got a wet backside, in fact I liked it. When we all finished Mr Goodwin put us all in to groups one and two and then he took us to have a drink I had a quick drink and it was delicious. I then lined up behind Jaedah.
I hope that we can do that run/race Occasionally. Can you believe it, we all had a good time. I liked that run a lot it was really fun. I hope that the run we did turns into the normal run.

Newspaper Towers
WALT: write a recount about our experience.
Have you ever built a tower of newspapers before? Well I have it is absolutely hard, but i guess it was with a group and there was a timer I think it would have been easier alone and without a timer. You should really give it a go one day.
When our teacher Mr Goodwin told us about the newspaper tower challenge. I thought it would be stacking all of the newspapers, and finding out which one was the highest. It wasn’t. Instead we had to make a plan once we got in our groups. For one part I wasn’t really listening, because I had too many ideas in my head. I faced Hinerangi who was beside me and then I mouthed “me and you”, and she did the eyebrows at me. We moved a little closer so we wouldn’t forget.
Next we worked out our plan. I was thinking a platform at the bottom, and then scrunched up paper at the top. Soon we started the building. Our plan failed. I thought that it would be as easy as baking a cake, apparently not. I was confident with my plan but I soon learned that you had to adapt is as you go.
My team was Hinerangi, Me, Nasibah, Ana, and Maria we were still feeling pretty confident. Our tower however was not going so swell, we then changed the plan and made some poles. We used the newspaper to hold it up. We never recovered though, and we lost.
After that I learned you had to adapt your plan and start over and over again. When we finished we had to put away the tape and scissors. Guess what we did what we did with the newspaper tower, yup we threw it in the bin!

Lisa and the Outcast
“Quick come with me” said Lisa “ The hunters are coming you will be safe with us.” Lisa was taking an outcast to their home. “ Excuse me lady where are you taking me” said the outcast. “ My name is Lisa and I am taking you to Hollowood and John they are my friends, and they will be at the great oak tree any questions, oh nevermind we’re here.” Lisa Told John that the outcast can use Oracle’s bed. When it was time to go to bed Lisa, gave him her vine mat. Just incase the tiger fur tickles him. Lisa had a lot of questions for him but he had more.
In the morning Lisa and the outcast woke at the same time. “ What’s your name outcast?” Said Lisa. “ my name is James, James Smith. What’s your name?” Said the Outcast. “My name is Lisa I told you. Where do you come from” said Lisa “and why are you an outcast?” There were so many but Lisa found out the most important ones what his name was and where he came from. When Hollowood and John woke up they saw James and then remembered that he was an outcast like the rest of them.
“Lisa what is his name” said Hollowood. “His name is James and he broke a law of his town.” Said Lisa. “My town law is that I can not marry someone who is already married but I had sang to a lady called Hueka and I was not allowed to. She loved me and I loved her. But she was married to a man that she also loved but not as much as me. Then one day she ran away with me and because of that I got banished to this complicated place.” Said James “ She told me that she would come for me but when she did i was being hunted and she was being dragged back by her own husband. The next thing you know i’m with Lisa”. That lunch time Lisa was showing James how it happened around there and how they survived.
The next day Oracle came and met James at first James’ short curly black hair stood on end and then when Oracle said “Hi mother how are you doing” and hugged her James almost fainted. “Hello my name is Oracle what happened to you?” Said Oracle. When he found out. He said “all of my relatives will meet you at the feast here put this on.” Oracle handed him a loincloth made of the leaves and vines of the acacia tree. That night Oracle had to say a prayer for the man it was about the journey he had come to live up with. That night james couldn’t sleep there was a talking tiger, a talking tree and a girl with superpowers he had to go to the jungle and climb the acacia tree. So that he could sing the song his mother used to sing to him he was very sad a nightmare apeared in his sleep that night but he knew there was always tomorrow.
The next day he woke up late having a sleep in and when he saw Oracle he gave him a big hug and thanked him for the loincloth. “ Where’s your mother Oracle” said James, “ She’s at the lake, you want to see her” he replied “yeah and I might have a swim myself.” Then he turned to the lake and then started to make a vine swing they had heaps of fun that day when it was a hunting day the 2 hunters asked James to go with them and watch when they got to the hunting ground they had an eye for a puma, they got the sleeping males of the family oracle was lighting a fire and then started to get the stones ready. “ Hey mum we have some left over tarantula. Should we keep it for food or give it to the ocelot cousins and puma cousins.” As soon as Oracle said that, they decided not to have the puma males for lunch the puma males they had put to sleep got to the family safe and sound when they woke up the ate the tarantulas they had been given. That night James attempted to tame an ocelot and he succeeded.
When Lisa woke up she realised that James was lost she used her supervision and then she saw that he was challenging the man for his wife she ran as fast as she could to watch she really wanted to help him, it wasn’t fair he only had an ocelot and the man had a gang. She got Oracle and then she decided to ride on his back for oracle had a gift from his mother shape shift he shape shifted into a full normal tiger. They ran through the jungle and then in mid running Lisa jumped off Oracles back and said “We wouldn't let you have all the fun would we.” she handed him a stone spear that she had made for hunting and she used her machete. That day James smith got the love of his life back and even a new pet. They celebrated by having the cacao beans made into this lovely drink made by Hueka. Everyone meted up they had a dance and chant around the fire and then ate some delicious (to them) capybara meet. In the end they parted their ways with their farewells and goodbyes and Lisa set back to her normal life... Or was it.
