Labeling the Parts of a Cell

Walt: Label the different parts of the cell through an animation.

Task Description: This movie was all about teaching you the different parts of the cell and what they do. When I started I made a centre stack on hyperstudio, This stack would be the one that I put all my other movies into. Then I made a stack for each organelle and recorded that stack to make a movie. Once I had finished making the movies on the little stack I recorded that one centre stacks with all of the movies inside of it. Once I had finally finished the movie I posted it onto my blog with a Walt, a Task Description, Labels and a Title.

Hypothesizing with onion cells.

Group: Hinerangi, Jahzara, and I

Aim: see onion cells on a microscope

Hypothesis: I reckon at 100X magnification we’ll be able to see the onion cells.

Equipment:

Microscope
onion
slide
cover slip
Tweezers
Blue dye

Method: We started with the slide. Then we pulled a thin layer of skin off of an onion with tweezers. We placed the onion skin onto the slide then put some saline onto it so that the blue stain would spread easily. Then we gently placed the cover slip onto the onion skin.

Observation: On the 10x microscope we saw the cells and they looked something like this.
On the 40x magnification we saw it a bit more zoomed in but there wasnt that much difference.

Then on the 100x magnification we could only see purple from the stain.

Conclusion: My hypothesis was wrong and we saw the onion cell in 10x magnification, then we saw it in 40x but we didn’t see it on 100x magnification.

Looking at Cheek cells

Today we decided to look at dead cheek cells. I was in a group with Paikea and Amelia. The first thing we had to do was get our slide and put our initials on it so we would know who's was who's. Once we had done that I gently scraped the sides of my mouth. Then I rubbed my saliva onto the slide. A drop sodium chloride so the cells would spread out and some stain so its easier to see. We drew the cells on green paper because its apart of observing things. We noticed that we could still see the organelles insinde of the Cells as we moved up.

Labeling the organelles.

This week we have been looking closer at cells. We looked at animal cells and had to identify the organelles inside of them. Organelles are to plants what the organs are to our bodies. Check out my slides to learn more.

The Tree of Life

This is the tree of life. In 1835 Charles Darwin figured this out by looking at different animals that look similar by seeing this he realised that everything is connected somehow. Animals change over millions of years and their changes help them survive in their environment. This definitely opened my eyes to the idea of everything being related. It's a very interesting concept and I must applaud it.

DLO Link

Click this link to view my DLO (Digital Learning Object).

The topic for this term was really interesting. I liked learning about other countries, and I learned some interesting facts. Learning about the countries helped open my eyes about the world around me. It was really fun.

Using the scratch was nothing new to me really. I used broadcast and it was a pain. I'm gonna have one giant block of code and no broadcast.  I will no longer be using broadcast.

Empanadas

Image result for empanadas
Today in room four we got to eat Empanadas which are a native dish from Argentina. It looks like a Korean Dumpling but it most definitely is not. The ingredients are Puff Pastry, Paprika, Mild spice, Onions, Mince, and Capsicum. When the scent hit my nose I immediately felt that it was very smoky with a hint of sweetness and spice. As I bit into it the texture was a satisfying softness. There was a meaty sweet taste and a hint of smokiness. You can definitely taste the meat and the sweet overpowered the spice. For Mrs Stones first attempt at cooking Empanadas I would give her a 9 out of 10. Mui Bien!

How to be a good Leader

Walt: Follow the structure of an explanation.
How to be a good leader is a particularly hard question to answer. It’s a very opinionated question, and there many different leaders in different eyes of different people. So in this piece of writing I will give examples of different types of leaders.

Responsibility. This is a trait that most people associate with leadership. Responsibility is the characteristic that in most people is taking the blame or baring the weight of a certain situation. Often leaders do this and try to work it out with a little bit of help from the people closest to them. A phrase commonly associated with responsibility is “take responsibility for your actions”. Well some people think that leaders do that a lot.

Respect. Another trait associated with leadership is Respect. Respect is a feeling of deep admiration and support. It’s also a way to say “I recognise you as a person and I understand that you are the same as me but also not, so I will treat you properly.” Good leaders know how to show this trait and people respect them for it.

Kindness. Ruling with an iron fist is not really the best thing to do. It shows fear and fear does not earn respect. Kind leaders are often respected by most people who wish to also be respected. When people are scared of a leader they’re more likely to turn their back on the person ruling with an iron fist.

So there you have it a bit of a summary on How to be a good leader. Responsibility, Respect and Kindness. These traits are the key things for a good leader. Hopefully for those who wish to become a leader you will take these traits as suggestions and keep them in mind.

Task Description: For this task I made a google doc and filed it. I wrote down things that make a good leader.  I posted it onto my blog, making sure I posted it to a high standard with a Walt, a Task Description, and Labels.
