The Sniper

Task Description: For this task I made a copy of the presentation, and put it into my reading folder. I then read the text. I was given a list of words that were, new to all of the members of the class, and we had to find the definition. On top of that we had to answer questions about the book. We were mainly thinking about language features and which words the author uses. I then posted it onto my blog with Title a Walt, Labels and a Task Description.

Hypothesizing with onion cells.

Group: Hinerangi, Jahzara, and I

Aim: see onion cells on a microscope

Hypothesis: I reckon at 100X magnification we’ll be able to see the onion cells.

Equipment:

Microscope
onion
slide
cover slip
Tweezers
Blue dye

Method: We started with the slide. Then we pulled a thin layer of skin off of an onion with tweezers. We placed the onion skin onto the slide then put some saline onto it so that the blue stain would spread easily. Then we gently placed the cover slip onto the onion skin.

Observation: On the 10x microscope we saw the cells and they looked something like this.
On the 40x magnification we saw it a bit more zoomed in but there wasnt that much difference.

Then on the 100x magnification we could only see purple from the stain.

Conclusion: My hypothesis was wrong and we saw the onion cell in 10x magnification, then we saw it in 40x but we didn’t see it on 100x magnification.

How to be a good son/daughter?

Walt: Write engaging introductions

Are you a good son or daughter? Some kids aren’t sure. This essay will give you some helpful tips on how to be a good son or daughter.

Listen. One thing parents hate is when their kid doesn’t listen to them, and that doesn’t just mean hearing. Listening is when you look at your parents when they talk and actually process what they’re saying. Then once you’ve processed what they’ve said actually go and do it.

Help around. Parents love it when they’re kids are helpful around the house. Especially when you do it without being asked. Try little things, like washing the dishes or even just bringing in the groceries and it’ll make things a lot easier for your parents. Helping around truly has its advantages.

Be thankful. Your parents do a lot for you. They feed you, clothe you, put a roof over your heads. That’s just a tiny portion of how much love your parents put into you. So say thank you and show it through your actions. Maybe even give your parents a massage when they come home from work, or give them breakfast in bed in the morning. Your parents want to feel loved and appreciated too.

I’m sure these three tips will definitely make your parents happier with you. Your actions reflect your thoughts. When your parents will see that your thinking about them and how they feel, they’ll be extremely happy with you.

Task Description: For this task I made a new doc in my writing folder. Before actually writing I brainstormed ideas for the body paragraphs. Once I finished writing my essay I posted it onto my blog with a Walt, a Task Description, a Title, and Labels.

Should we have school uniforms?

School uniforms are something in almost every primary and secondary school in New Zealand. This has become a strong source of debate. Uniforms are the better choice because they let kids kick their financial background out of the door, gives students a better grasp on smart clothing choices, and keeps kids free from peer pressure.

Uniforms bring people of all different financial backgrounds into one group. The “rich kids” are bound to have expensive clothes, the “poor kids” are bound to have things like hand-me-downs, op shop clothes and other things. If you have a uniform the kids are all wearing the same thing and they can’t tell which is which. It puts the students on an even pedestal and no one is better than the other. This is what we want in modern society and if schools do this it brings the same attitude outside of school.

Uniforms are really smart looking. They make children seem like they know how to dress in a professional sense. This prepares them for the future. Especially if they want to take on professional jobs in the future. It gives students a glimpse into what they should look like so they do not humiliate themselves. We don’t want to humiliate our kids do we?

Uniforms also shield kids from peer pressure. Some kid could’ve just gotten the latest gucci hoodie and then everyone gets one, then there’s the kids who can’t afford a gucci hoodie and they feel left out. Peer pressure is a pretty common thing and students can get really depressed because of it. Uniforms prevent this, because they are all the same.

To conclude uniforms are the best form of clothing for schools. They provide an air of professionalism and make the students feel equal. Sure they may be expensive and a little bit uncomfortable at times but it is worth it. All schools should have uniforms because they make the schools a better place.

Animal testing

Walt: Use correct paragraph structure
What is animal testing? Animal testing is the act of taking animals and using them to test things that may or may not affect humans. Typically this is carried out to find cures for diseases or product testing. The opinions on animal testing vary from person to person. However, animal testing is still something we do to this day. And it needs to stop.

The animals that scientists typically use vary from species to species. It is often lab-grown mice, however, cats, dogs, hamsters, farm animals, guinea pigs, and even nonhuman primates (Gorillas, monkey, etc) are also used. Primates. They test on our cousins. The cousins we work so hard to keep alive. How would they feel?

Some animal testing is even pointless. People are just doing the same tests again and again. All to gain money. Money that they already have lots of . They test over and over again because of competition and money, they want to find their own results instead of using those found by a different company. They slowly make progress repeating a test over and over again without any results and then move on to the next test, repeating this slow agonising process.

We also test make up products on animals. A lot of new makeup products with new ingredients get tested on animals like bunnies or guinea pigs. They make new dangerous products when they already have lots of other safe makeup products. They don't need all these new products when we already have so many and we should instead reuse the ingredients that have already been proven safe.

Animal testing is inhumane. People may see it as a way to solve problems but in reality, we just add more problems. Try to minimize the encouragement of animal testing. Use animal testing free products and trust more reliable labels. Let’s make this world animal cruelty free.

Task Description: For this task I made a new doc and put it into my writing folder. I wrote my five paragraph essay and then, checked for spelling and grammar mistakes. I posted it onto my blog with a Walt, Task Description, Labels, and a Title.

Do aliens exist?

Aliens are a common subject in the entertainment department, and there has been a considerable amount of interest in the idea that we are not alone in the universe. They’ve been in blockbuster movies, and popular posts in the media. But do they actually exist?
The universe is huge. You can’t even begin to imagine how massive it is. There are one hundred billion galaxies in the universe and those galaxies have thousands of stars inside of them, and those stars will most likely carry a solar system of exoplanets. One of those exoplanets in one of those solar systems is bound to be in a goldilocks zone and have life.
Some species on earth have amazing adaptations to help them in extreme conditions. What’s more extreme than another planet? Like Europa One of jupiter's moons, has water and that’s essential for life . After all the first reproductive species on earth evolved in the water. So it’s possible that there could be life on Europa even though it’s so far away from the goldilocks zone.
Why is the government investing in finding Aliens? The government could have enough evidence to prove that aliens do exist. Otherwise they would be blowing so much money that goes into finding these extraterrestrial beings.
So there is my evidence to conclude the fact that extraterrestrial life does exist.  Also area 51.

What do I know about Scientists?

Image result for neil degrasse tysonScientists probably have the most stereotypical expectations in our modern day society. But they aren't actually what they seem. I mean look at Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you look at him and don't know who he is. He looks like a normal person.

Scientists study the things around us and how they work. They don't Mix potions together and then test them on themselves. They test chemical reactions and look in microscopes to see the smallest things in the world. They don't Harness the suns power to make an ultimate death ray.

Scientists work to find understanding of the world around us and the things inside us. They are not makers of destruction. They are finders of Solutions.

DLO Link

Click this link to view my DLO (Digital Learning Object).

The topic for this term was really interesting. I liked learning about other countries, and I learned some interesting facts. Learning about the countries helped open my eyes about the world around me. It was really fun.

Using the scratch was nothing new to me really. I used broadcast and it was a pain. I'm gonna have one giant block of code and no broadcast.  I will no longer be using broadcast.

The Gatherers

Task Description: For this task I read a fictional text called the gatherers. The first slide was a question and answers about the uncontacted tribes in Brazil and the next slide was about the fictional text. I then recorded my questions and musings about the text. Once I had chosen and finished my create task I posted this onto my blog. Hope you enjoy.

Colonization

Colonisation is an old way of gathering land under one nation or empire. It’s been going on for thousands of years but the first world countries, only stopped around a couple hundred years ago. That still doesn’t mean that 2rd and 3nd world countries have stopped, and even now the commonwealth is still a remnant of the British empire which was an empire based on colonisation.

Colonisation has been around for thousands and thousands of years. The Romans used it, the Incas used it, the Greeks used it, the Spanish used it, the British used it. Many countries are still under the influence of colonisation. Most of Africa is still under the rule of colonising leaders. Even though many countries are now independent, lots of countries are still being colonised.

Does colonisation have any benefits? In short: No. Although many colonisers believe they are helping people by giving them new technology, they aren’t helping the natives. The best jobs end up going to the colonisers. The natives end up becoming slaves and the colonisers never give the natives even some middle grade job opportunities. Colonisation has hardly ever had any good benefits for the natives, only for the invaders.

Some colonisation however have had peaceful resolves. Such as the treaty of Waitangi between the British Empire and the Maori people of New Zealand. The Brits came to New Zealand and they suggested that they create a treaty and the Maori agreed. But because of the differences between the Maori and English texts there was conflict. So then the government decided to create the Waitangi tribunal and we’ve been working to create a better environment for the Maori ever since.

Colonisation was brutal period that helped shape our history. The only good that it ever gave anyone was the ability to realise our mistakes. Hopefully in the future people will take a look at the things we did and try to stop themselves from going down that rocky path again.

Empanadas

Image result for empanadas
Today in room four we got to eat Empanadas which are a native dish from Argentina. It looks like a Korean Dumpling but it most definitely is not. The ingredients are Puff Pastry, Paprika, Mild spice, Onions, Mince, and Capsicum. When the scent hit my nose I immediately felt that it was very smoky with a hint of sweetness and spice. As I bit into it the texture was a satisfying softness. There was a meaty sweet taste and a hint of smokiness. You can definitely taste the meat and the sweet overpowered the spice. For Mrs Stones first attempt at cooking Empanadas I would give her a 9 out of 10. Mui Bien!

Europe and North America's Connections.

Europe and North america have lots of similarities. It would make sense since in the past Europeans were the people who colonised america.
When the European Colonists came to america they brought a lot of things with them. Things like Culture, Religion, Clothes, Food Recipes, and many other things. They stayed in america and ended up creating a vast civilisation. Nowadays there are many similarities between Europe and North america. Some are Easy to see like Languages. Whereas some have been modified like Food.
In this Venn diagram you can see all the similarities and differences we could think of. I hope you enjoy.
