My national holiday would have to be called Maori day. It is the day we celebrate on the 1st of June it celebrates Kupe’s discovery of New Zealand. To celebrate it we would have Hangis, get a day off work and we would watch some Kapa Haka.
I can't believe I hadn't really heard much about Kupe before you mentioned him. All I knew was that he is said to have discovered NZ. I read about him online and found out some legends. He is a lot like Maui in a way isn't he.
I like the idea of a National Holiday that recognises Maori as the discoverers of this country. I couldn't see anything about June 1st though. Is it already an important day or did you just choose it?
